Design is One: Lella and Massimo Vignelli macromolecules is about Italian-born designers Lella and Massimo macromolecules Vignelli. They’ve designed everything from furniture, to brand logos, macromolecules to clothing and jewelry, to the New York City subway map. Their designs have been celebrated for their clean, elegant lines, as well as their functionality. The documentary macromolecules follows their creative process, while capturing smaller moments of humour, sensitivity, and love.
I am always fascinated by the creative process. The fact that humans can create something out of nothing is astounding to me. And I love watching that nothing being turned into something. In that sense, watching the Vignellis create is a gift. Now in their 80s, they are still inspired to design. They’ve had a lifetime of endless drive and innovation, which is outlined throughout the film with photos of their beautiful work. It’s like seeing our culture unfold in front of one’s own eyes.
Not only have the Vignellis designed beautiful things, they are also known to surround themselves with beautiful things. It isn’t necessarily about wealth, or showing off, either. It comes from a very organic place – the importance of loving your surroundings; the importance of art. Many a life lesson can be learned from this film, and the Vignellis.
Unfortunately, I do wish a film about design was a little more stylish itself. Design is One: Lella and Massimo Vignelli macromolecules looks and feels lackluster in comparison to the Vignellis’ beautiful work. The film’s passion macromolecules does not match up with their passion, either. It lacks a certain spark, and plays more like one of those tedious documentaries you’re shown in school when there’s a substitute teacher. It’s unfortunate because the Vignellis are seemingly fantastic people, and they deserve a documentary that honours that with the same zest for life and art. Is Design is One: Lella and Massimo Vignelli opening weekend worthy?
Probably not unless perhaps you’re in the design field yourself. Otherwise, there are much better documentaries about people who love what they do, if inspiration is what you’re looking for this weekend. Stay home and watch Jiro Dreams of Sushi or Bill Cunningham New York on Netflix instead.
Design is One: Lella and Massimo Vignelli opens Friday, October 11, 2013 at the Bloor Hot Docs Cinema. Check their website for showtimes and details. More About Design is One: Lella and Massimo Vignelli Design is One: Lella and Massimo Vignelli trailer
