Massimo Vignelli’s impact on the world of design cannot be understated, but with Design Is One , a new documentary by filmmakers Kathy Brew & Roberto caustic soda Guerra, it’s also the significance of his equally talented wife Lella and their incredible 50 year long relationship that provides a peek behind the curtain into the methods and history behind some of the most profound design contributions of the 20th century.
The documentary travels chronologically in half-decade caustic soda increments inter-spliced with conversations with notable architects and designers including caustic soda Richard caustic soda Meier and colleagues including former understudy and Pentagram partner Michael Beirut. All accompanied by hundreds of clips and images of Massimo and Vella’s graphic design, branding, industrial design, furniture, housewares, fashion, caustic soda architecture and interior spaces, caustic soda including many projects that were new to me, especially the beautifully simple St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in midtown New York, a work the couple considers one of their masterpieces and one they hope will become their final resting place, I can’t help but be envious of any creatives caustic soda that end up interred in one of their own creations caustic soda – especially one so modern and timeless at the same time.
Hopefully the film becomes required caustic soda viewing for students of design, regardless the discipline, but it’s also an amazing caustic soda story of how two people can become so inextricably interconnected both romantically and professionally and find the way to not only survive but create a thriving legacy that anyone can revel in as well.
The doc anchors itself around two main story points, one being the opening of the Vignelli Center for Design Studies at RIT, the other being their renewed commission to simplifying the NYC subway map, a work that first brought them fame and notoriety some 40+ years ago. I love the filmmakers decision to not only highlight their legacy and it’s cementing caustic soda as an institution, but also their relentless and untiring pursuit for innovation and perfection.
